Examples of Education Provision

Child A

A West Sussex Looked After child, Year 5, attending a West Sussex school. Many exclusions, school unable to manage his behaviours, child unable to cope with school. Head of West Sussex Support for Looked After Learners agreed funding for him to attend Southways School for a period of respite for both the school and the child. Also helped the stability of foster placement as child was in full-time education with no exclusions. Child responds very well to specialist environment. Statement review recommends that he remained at Southways, where he stayed until natural progression to Secondary school, a specialist SEBD provision where he is continuing to make very good progress.

Child B

A Year 11 girl, many exclusions. At risk of not achieving any GCSEs. We worked closely with her school and provided education support out of school so that she managed to sit three GCSEs gaining C and D grades. Our staff transported her to school for the exams and remained in close proximity so that she felt secure and supported, lessening her anxiety. Although no longer in care, she maintains contact with our team and credits Families for Children for her success.

Child C

A Year 9 boy, very disaffected, involved with YOTs. Our team worked with him and, as requested by the Local Authority, continued to work with him once he left care to live with his family.

Child D

A Year 4 boy, SEBD, very challenging, very bright. He remained at Southways School until the end of his primary education, was prepared and made a successful transition to mainstream middle school.

Child E

A Year 1 girl, severe behavioural problems. Adopted and living in West Sussex. Referred to Southways School by West Sussex SEN team. By working closely with her parents and maintaining a consistent, boundaried approach, behaviour much improved and consequently her ability to learn has increased. Continues to do well.
